In 1989 Sherwood Hamill began to put his art and cabinetmaking background to use in furniture design. At a young and impressionable age growing up in Portland, Maine, Hamill had the opportunity to travel with his family to the 1964 New York Worlds Fair and later to Expo '67 in Montreal. Having been exposed and seduced by this "mechanical Eden" of modern architecture and design at an early age, the essence of modernism has remained potent and has become the basis of which the company was founded. Sherwood Hamill provides unique, craft built modern furniture to the individual and design professional.

Does nature inspire you?
I like to be reminded of it's power and beauty. This will happen in the wilderness and it can happen seeing a
wild animal or a beautiful tree in an urban area.
Favorite childhood hero/TV star?
Growing up and watching the space program on TV was amazing. I like airplanes and astronauts -
Chuck Yeager was pretty cool.
What sound would the Vector Chair make?
It would make a peaceful hum that you wouldn't hear unless you were very quiet.
What about the Mod Pod?
The mod pod is more playful and only makes a sound when you aren't looking. When you do look at it, you
aren't sure if it has just moved.
What is good design to you?
Creating an object that people want to come home to.
What designs have you done that you feel the closest to?
It changes but I like the sidecases and the freedom I've had designing them.
If you designed a rug, what would it look like?
I just designed my first rug and it looked like a piece of bark (but it was supposed to look like a field of
wildflowers).
Do you and Angela collaborate on designs?
Aside from certain projects, there is an indirect collaboration going on, the collaboration of living together and
sharing dreams. We are always sharing inspirations.
Were you artistic as a child?
When I was a child, I mostly drew, did some painting, and engaged in all kinds of craft. I also had an interest in
mechanical things like taking apart lawn mowers and hanging around older gear heads that knew what they
were doing.
If you could have a part time job with nothing to do with design, what would it be?
It would be fun to cook in a good restaurant. I'd like to learn how to prepare good food.
If you could write a book, what would it be about?
I'd write a story about a cat. Cats have certain special lives.
When you were a young boy, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was 5, I wanted to be a fireman. That was the career of choice at that time. When I was 6, I thought
about it and decided that wasn't what I wanted to do. I don't remember what I wanted to do at 10. When I was 14
I wanted to be a guitar player.
What do you want to be doing when you're 80?
Staying out of the way and enjoying nature.
